:- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Darryl Campbell -- Don't look away : Over the last year, we've come to realize that so many are involved in "cleaning up other people's messes." Robert Jensen has been cleaning up the world's greatest tragedies for decades. Based on his experience with the aftermath of airplane crashes, terrorist attacks, and other disasters, Jensen gives us not only a first-hand insight into the logistics of disaster, but also the hard truths about risk and death we need to face. He reminds us that inequality endures even after life, as the varied treatment of rich diplomats vs. local populations shows in the aftermath of earthquakes in Haiti. He details how governments and companies tend to prepare for the last disaster when they should be looking around the corner for the next one. And he demonstrates how compassion and respect matter in ways that we can't always appreciate in the moment. ( Reviewed in the United States on September 30, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Dean Tarbet LTC (Retired), US Army -- The human side of disaster response. : The disaster has happened, what do you do now? Robert Jensen knows. He’s been dealing with the countless challenges associated with the human aspects of disasters for most of his life. Personal Effects gives us a glimpse into the specifics of responding to a mass casualty event - the good, bad, ugly and the simple and complex. Robert is a great storyteller, with lots to tell. He properly focuses on the human elements and multitude of tragedies within, without revealing the gruesome details one can only imagine he has seen. He keeps you interested with his much needed sense of humor, unquestioned expertise, unwavering commitment to survivors and the desire to prepare us for the next catastrophic event. He teaches disasters are going to happen. How you plan and execute is tremendously important for those that live. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 4, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from JoyNealKidney -- Life's dark side : This is a compelling memoir about dealing with life's dark side, through decades of dealing with major disasters all around the world, including difficulties arising from Bosnian war casualties. I was especially interested in this book having read about the forensics involved in identifying the casualties in Susan Sheehan's "A Missing Plane" from WWII. And about the Graves Registration Teams during WWII in Europe, where they eventually located the remains of a young uncle who was KIA, and the care they gave in making sure of his true identification. The chapter on DNA is markedly informative. The book also has an index. ( Reviewed in the United States on November 1, 2021 )
- 2.0 out of 5 stars from Kate Donnelly -- A little dissapointed. : Pre-orderd this book, and looked forward to it. However. A great many pages are given over to the author making sure we understand how different he is, how unusual as a person. Off putting. As well, he mentions Peggy's Cove in regard to the Swissair 1111 plane crash. That is in NOVA SCOTIA, not Newfoundland. And if he visited Titanic graves in Fairview cemetery, he would have also not been in Newfoundland, but Halifax Nova Scotia. Sloppy. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 1, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Andy L. -- An eye-opening account of what goes on behind the scenes of major disasters. : Jensen touches on both the logistic and human side of disaster relief. It's a must read for first responders and medical practitioners and reccomend read for all. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 23, 2021 )
- 4.0 out of 5 stars from Mara L. -- Fascinating, Heavy Read : Personal Effects by Robert A. Jensen provides a fascinating, behind-the-scenes look at catastrophes and the necessary work completed for the dead and their families. Jensen has spent three decades recovering the dead and their personal effects in disasters, from plane crashes to earthquakes. The author owns the world’s leading disaster management company and has worked for the federal government in this capacity. Jensen gives his honest accounts and experiences working behind the scenes to help in the face of calamity and confusion. His writing sometimes seem detached, but it seems compartmentalization would be absolutely necessary in his job. He takes us through a variety of tragedies and I learned so much from this book.
